Part III is coming up shortly (and even when I read back over Parts I and II, it seems unbelievable). I can laugh at it now. But then? Not hardly….
Damn, I didn’t know white guys down in the South were so racist! I guess that’s to be expected though. Sorry the speed dating didn’t work out for you. Keep your head up and someone’ll come along.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! It’s not good bye…it’s just smell ya later.
So what do you think of that show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” on the Bravo network?

To be honest with you, I’ve never seen it. And I really kinda don’t want to see it. All these gay shows popping up recently (and the ones coming up in the fall) just don’t hit the mark with me at all. There’s hardly a diverse representation of the gay community being portrayed at all, and it just seems like a big farce.
Karsh yo theres this dude at work who i been checking out trying to say somethign cuz i’m on the low and shit and he’s a fag but i see how he be lookin and i wanna say somethin but if he spread my shit imma beat hisas swhat should i do?
Hmm…so it sounds to me that you are “interested” (romantically, sexually, I don’t know) in a guy at work, but you don’t want to step to him because he’s a “fag” (which I guess means that he’s a bit more flamboyant with his sexuality than you are) and because you know he would probably kiss and tell (of which you have proposed physical violence as the answer) you are afraid.
Just don’t do it. It seems to me that your privacy and discretion is a very important thing to you. Do you and this brotha work in the same office or department? Are you prepared for some ill shit in case things don’t work out? I’d say don’t approach until you have more facts. Or at least some anger management classes.
I am an angry Black lesbian and I have a question which I hope you can answer for me. Why does it seem so much better for White gays than Black gays? Now when I say white gays, I mean the white-looking latinos and asians and even some of the mixed gays. When I meanBlack gays, i’m talking about mexicans and Blacks. You look on TV and in newsstands and everything is all “queer eye” or “boy meets boy” or “will and grace” when it comes to white gays, and for Black gays everythign is negative, like the nytimes article about brothas on the DL or the AIDS/HIV scare. and tv shows? we’re the loud, sissified queen or the dreadlocked african sister. All stereotypes. and i don’t think there’s a positive black gay magaine out there! all the black gay magazines i’ve seen have to be hidden behind plastic and store counters. i just feel ike we haven’t made any progress!!!! white gays continue to go forward and we’re just making stepsbackward. what can we do/??

Wow. I’m not even sure where to begin! You definitely have a point worth exploring, but I’m not sure I like how you’re approaching/categorizing the issue. When you say White gays, you then group in Asians and “White-looking” Latinos, but then with Black gays, you group in Mexicans? Why not just split Asians into mainland and Pacific Islanders? It reminds me of what a guy I dated out in California told me, “If you’re White, you’re White. If you’re Asian, you’re White. If you’re Hispanic or Latino, you’re White. But if you’re Mexican, then you’re Black.” And this guy was mixed!
Have you heard of The Closet? Have you read Arise Magazine? I’m not saying you should turn a blind eye to the obvious negative media coverage Black gays have received as of late, but I’m a believer that progress is being slowly made. If you want to see a Black gay character on network TV that’s not a caricatured stereotype, then write to the networks and let your voice be heard (I still haven’t seen Mathew St. Patrick on Six Feet Under but I heard he’s good)!
Personal question: do your parents know you’re gay?
kat
Well…yes and no. Yes in that my mom knows because some guy here in Atlanta who I wasn’t feeling found my home number, called her, and told her the truth (which she didn’t take well at all). So my mom, grandparents, stepfather, and brother know (which is one reason I have not been back home in years). But my real father? I don’t think he knows. All we share is a name, which should let you know how much of a rat’s ass I give about the situation.
Well white gay men can be racist anywhere. I live in NYC and have gotten similiar reactions in chat rooms when my race comes up.
Some Black people consider other people of color (POC) white, but many (if not most) of them wouldn’t consider themselves that. That definitely goes for many (if not most) whites. It’s a preference thing: most folk like to be around/involved with their own kind.
It’s common that a lot of black people feel that if you aren’t black, you’re white. Remember Bill Belamy’s mom from THE BROTHERS?:
MOM: Don’t bring up that fool to me, left me for some white woman.
BRIAN: She’s Hawaiian.
MOM: If she ain’t black she’s white.
BRIAN: See? That’s what I’m talking about! That’s just ridiculous.
MOM: A fact of life.
BRIAN: That’s crazy. Latino women?
MOM: A white woman with a taco.
BRIAN: So I guess Asian woman–
MOM: A white woman who no-speaka the goddamn English!
