I’m thinking of getting on a game show. Hell, even if you lose, you still walk away with whatever you win. Take Jeopardy! for example — third place gets $1000. I can live with that. And Wheel of Fortune? Piece of cake. Now I just have to wait for them to come to Atlanta for tryouts. Sounds easy enough. Have you been on a game show? Did you win anything? How easy was it? Inquiring minds — and dwindling bank accounts — want to know.
UPDATE: Is it just me, or do you find it offensive that there are some Black/African-American folks runnin’ around nowadays calling themselves — and others of their same race — Negro-Americans?
A couple of years ago, when I was also broke, Jeopardy came to NYC for tryouts. A hotel ballroom full of people who had signed up through their website or phone line were in attendance by invitation only. As I recall we had to take a 35 question True/False quiz, watching questions flashed on a tv monitor. They then took a break and tabulated everyone’s results, and only those who passed got to stick around and play a mock game. I am proud to say I passed and got to play the game. But the game is tough. It’s just like the show, with three contestants answering with just as much time as on the show. You can’t buzz in until the question has been read, which is the hard part. People who did well on the mock game could then be invited to come to California to be on the show, at the producer’s discretion. The hitch: you gotta pay your own way out there if you’re called. I never got called, and at the time didn’t have the money to go out there anyway.
