Scaring people is not the best way to educate them, but obviously nothing else has worked so far. –overheard on the bus this morning

AIDS is scary; there's no doubt about that. With five people dying worldwide every minute of every day, this disease is no joke. You fuck around (no pun intended) one time — because it only takes one time — and tag, you're it. The deeply personal stories I've read have really made me see that we need to do everything we can to help stop the spread of this disease. Education is the real key here.

With that in mind, here are some links which will hopefully spark some discussion.

I must say thank you for the things you've been posting about AIDS–they made for fascinating, enlightening, and thought-provoking reading. That doesn't really convey what I mean, of course, as it sounds light-hearted, but… well… you probably get the gist.

Karsh, I feel like my head is gonna explode! I try and learn something new everyday and today, I learned about bugchasers. This is the sickest most depraved thing I have ever heard and I am personally offended and appalled by the denial of not just the medical community, but by Gay/Lesbian organizations. To pretend that this phenomenon does not exist only exacerbates the problem. How will we ever get rid of this plague if stupid people seek to become infected? I just don't get it. There should be a law against this kind of behavior. I know it seems like suicide, but by continuing to promote the spread of the virus, aren't these bugchasers responsible for killing countless others? That's murder. This makes me very sad for our country and our future.

FYI, Newsweek revealed that the Rolling Stones bugchasers story was heavily flawed. They cited interviews with people quoted in Rolling Stone who deny saying the things they said. There is considerable doubt as to the veracity of the allegations or the prevalence of this "so-called" phenomenon.

Yeah, that Rolling Stones article is trash, in my opinion. That's not to say that the issue doesn't exist - because it does.

I have a pretty good blog entry about this but I'm not sure if I am ready to open that can of worms just yet.

Just because Rolling Stones didn't get real people doesn't mean that this isn't a real problem or that the information isn't true. I know for a fact that it is more than true and more than disgusting. People like "bugchasers" make a horrible name for everysingle person in the world.
