Under Construction

Grab a hard hat now - I won't warn you later. My oh-so-gracious hosting company Surpass Hosting had recently been hit by some pretty malicious server attacks which left this site (and a couple others I have) blowing in the wind. It's been about a week, and now everything's pretty much back to working order. Still a few file permission errors on their end, but for the most part everything's hunky dory. With that being said, I'm gonna need to find a new host soon. Don't get me wrong, I love Surpass like a play cousin, but the level of customer service I received was just plain unacceptable. Any suggestions, y'all? EJ and Prime are twisting my arm about Dreamhost. I'll keep it in mind.

Other shit around the blog house that needs to get done includes:

  • Switching all pages and archives to PHP
  • Adding some Flash to the page (mainly the banner)
  • Hand-rolling my own blogroll (because I'm tired of making the distinction between blogs with XML feeds and blogs that don't have them - call me selifshly nerdy, but if your site has no XML feed for my aggregator, chances are you won't get visited by me 'less I really like your style)
  • Switching the archives from Berkeley DB over to a MySQL database
  • Renumbering the entries (because for some reason, my first blog started at #73 instead of #1)
  • Tossing a few new plugins around here to spruce up the place

But the format won't change - I've grown way too fond of this layout.

  1. I cast my vote for Dreamhost. I have had Verio service on another site for many years but the prompt customer service responses that I have received from Dreamhost has impressed the heck out of me — there is no comparison.

  3. I use lunarpages and I love them. http://lunarpages.com/

You sound pretty handy in this tech arena, I think I have to pull your ear on some stuff I'm trying to do with my site.

And of course, Happy New Year and Welcome Back.

I think on the XML feeds we need to educate people about how important they are in letting folks know your site's been updated. I'm finding more and more that I'm only visiting XML and RSS feed friendly sites. It's just easier to deal with then saving to favorites or going with a links list.

  4. Another vote for Dreamhost. I've been with them since November, after three years of using Aplus.net for my previous domain, and getting fed up at having absolutely no features.

Plus, shell accounts and MySQL are of the gooood.

  5. Good luck on re-numbering your archives. It's tricky to do and you will break all of the links to those pages in the process.

  6. I am late to this, but TigerTech has been my host for more than two years. Never had a problem and they are always prompt repliers to my emails. Hell, they helped me to start up when I knew almost nothing aboutg HTML (I now know a tiny bit now).

And if I didn't send it before: Happy New Year Greetings!
