Because I don’t normally get all riled up about current events, this is a rarity.

And Then There Were Five

The Democratic candidates are dropping like flies. With Clark just dropping out of the race and now endorsing Kerry, that leaves only five: Kucinich, Kerry, Sharpton, Edwards, and Dean. Who do I support? Kucinich. I’m loving his views on education and health care, pulling out of NAFTA and the WTO, and his support of equal rights and civil rights for the GLBT community. Gay Marriage and Black Folks

On the Tavis Smiley Show, there has been a great deal of talk about Gay Marriage and African-Americans (parts 1, 2, and 3). Via Ronn, I listened to the audio archive with Keith Boykin‘s commentary on the gay marriage issue. Boykin had some good points, but it’s what he said near the end of the interview:

“I always say that the Black church is the most homophobic, yet the most homo-tolerant institution in our community. If you look at the minister’s words, you might think it’s homophobic, but if you look behind the minister at the…the choir members and the music directors and the organist, you’ll see that the churches are filled with gays and lesbians.”

Now maybe I’m just reading more into this than what was said (which wouldn’t be the first time because I’m anal(ytical) like that), but do “prominent” leaders in the Black GLBT community really need to start making judgment calls on members of the Black church off of a few stereotypes? Maybe it’s OK because they (the “prominent” leaders) are gay too.

If you’ll excuse me, I’ll just put on this cardigan sweater and these glasses so I can look smarter.

As you were.
