Computer experts, foreign language specialists lead list of military’s needs

The government is taking the first steps toward a targeted military draft of Americans with special skills in computers and foreign languages.

The Selective Service System has begun the process of creating the procedures and policies to conduct such a targeted draft in case military officials ask Congress to authorize it and the lawmakers agree to such a request.

A targeted registration and draft is “is strictly in the planning stage,” said Flahavan, adding that “the whole thing is driven by what appears to be the more pressing and relevant need today” — the deficit in language and computer experts.

Hmm…remember just a few years back when the computer experts were in high demand? Could this be what it was for?

But the military has had particular difficulty attracting and retaining language experts, especially people knowledgeable about Arabic and various Afghan dialects.

But it’s better to have no translators than gay ones, right Dubya? If I were a Comp. Sci. or Math major, I’d be a tad bit concerned about this. Just don’t lose sleep over it. Spring Break and all, you know.

And if you’re sick of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, then check out Mozilla Thunderbird, an all-in-one mail client with Bayesian spam filtering (better spam control for you laypeople). It can even import your Outlook or OE settings.

So what’re you waiting for? Ditch the blue and come hop on the Mozilla bandwagon.
