Battle of the MP3 players!
Posted on 09/01/04 @ 4:55 pm

OK, so I said I wanted an iPod Mini…I’ve changed my mind. Well, not totally, that is.

I trolled around CNet product reviews on my lunchbreak and ran across an MP3 Player Guide to see what kind of MP3 user I am. On the real, I’ve got a solid 10GB of music on The Magi, 6GB of which I could probably totally delete because I’m just not feeling it anymore. However, I am quick to scoop up an MP3 e-book or foreign language file (eu estou tentando aprender o Português) or something of that nature just because doing cryptograms on the train gets boring after a while. I don’t spend as much time on the road as I’d like, and a nice travel mix of about 64 – 65 songs does the trick for me, so I fall right into the commuter range on this test for which they suggest the Creative Nomad MuVo Slim. Emphasis on slim; this baby’s only 3/10″ thick. Drop it and it’s pretty much toast. It does have an FM tuner and voice recording…very handy for those on the fly notes.

I think I’ll have to check one of these puppies out this weekend.

  1. I wanna know how many people actually recognized and understood your NGE reference. ;)

  2. It’s a nice unit, but I couldnt deal with just 256MB. I’ve got that size in a thumbdrive, and while it holds a nice share of songs, it doesn’t really cover the whole “moods/moments” aspect. Of course I’m also more inclined to use it as a portable hard drive anyway. I suppose I’m more of an audiophile/file hoarder. Still, the number one feature I really want is a device with a seamless digital integration with my car stereo…. DAMN YOU I-POD/BMW for making me seek perfection!

  3. Okay, I’m going to have to flip-flop on this. Last time, I touted the full-version iPod over the mini, but your reply made a good case for the mini. 256MB isn’t very much, unless you are going to change your line up of music every other day. I have 128MB in my Tungsten, which is enough for about two albums in AAC format, but after the first couple of days and songs start repeating, you’ll realize how little capacity that is. 256 is indeed better than 128, but obviously none of that holds a candle to 4GB.

Of course, this only applies if, unlike myself, you’d rather have a certain selection of songs with you most of the time. I get addicted to certain albums at a time, so for me, the mini’s probably the best choice, so that I can get a break from something every now and then.

As always, your mileage may vary.
