I dont think you had a unique experience at the Apple Store – I had something similar in San Francisco this year when I was trying to purchase an iPod. They have just opened one in London too and here they seem to have a policy of not approaching customers unless you specifically ask them for assistance.
If you are looking for a great portable device for writing, which can sync with PC for uploading etc.. you might want to have a look at the Psion Netbook.
I got me one of these back in 1999 (so mine is the Symbian edition) but it is great, portable and doesnt have all the bells and whistles which the PC and MAC guys will try to sell you. One thing I have added to mine is a WiFi card – just so I can hook it into my home networks.
It has a full size keyboard, is instant on, and best of all it runs all day off a single battery charge!
