Gay Male Biphobia?
Posted on 02/06/05 @ 7:19 pm

While surfin' over at LiveJournal, I ran across obsidianbear's blog and a very interesting entry on male biphobia:

Do you think men can be biphobic? Usually, it's lesbians and bisexual women that have beef with each other. I don't hear men argue as much about it. I wonder if bisexual men have a plus because they would be perceived as more butch. Maybe with gay male tolerance of non-monogamy, there's more of a "So? And?" when it comes to guys who kick it with both genders.

But then again, I can't say I've heard of anyone on LJ identify as a bisexual man. There's a women's book called "Closer to Home: Bisexuality and Feminism" which states that maybe sexual orientation is a male secondary sex characteristic, but that women may learn or be pushed into their sexual choices. Maybe most guys are either Kinseyan 0s or 6s. But I read a book by Fred Whitam that looked at Brazil, Guatemala, and the Philippines and it said that outside of the US there is much contact between 1s and 6s.

You think a bisexual bear would have an easy to coming out or a hard time?

I'm ambivalent on this issue. Were I to totally base my feelings off of past experiences, I'd say I'm gunshy about bisexual men. You see, The Ex, The Why and Opportunity are/were bi. Two of the three left me for women (eventually), but now have boyfriends. For those two, being bi was the "escape plan". Didn't work out with a guy? Then get a girl and BAM! Problem solved. They were also both fiercely religious and felt being bi was their "penance" and somehow pussy was the salvation. There's nothing worse after busting a nut than talk about religion. Color me unconvinced.

On the other hand, I know sexuality is far from being as dichotomous as gay and straight. But a lot of people feel otherwise. They may not see being bisexual as an actual sexual orientation but more of a limbo between straight and gay. Kinsey had a field day with this issue.

So what're your thoughts on this?
