Police: Ga. bride-to-be fabricated kidnap tale

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A Georgia bride-to-be who vanished just days before her wedding turned up in New Mexico and fabricated a tale of abduction before admitting Saturday that she had gotten cold feet and "needed some time alone," police said. Jennifer Wilbanks, 32, was in police custody more than 1,420 miles from her home on what was supposed to be her wedding day. "It turns out that Miss Wilbanks basically felt the pressure of this large wedding and could not handle it," said Randy Belcher, the police chief in Duluth, Ga., the Atlanta suburb where Wilbanks lives with her fiance. He said there would be no criminal charges. Wilbanks, whose disappearance set off a nationwide hunt, called her fiance, John Mason, from a pay phone late Friday and told him that she had been kidnapped while jogging three days before, authorities said. Her family rejoiced that she was safe, telling reporters that the media coverage apparently got to the kidnappers. But Wilbanks soon recanted, according to police. Ray Schultz, chief of police in Albuquerque, said Wilbanks "had become scared and concerned about her impending marriage and decided she needed some time alone." He said she traveled to Las Vegas by bus before going to Albuquerque. "She’s obviously very concerned about the stress that she’s been through, the stress that’s been placed on her family," he said. "She is very upset."

I can't wait for SNL and/or MadTV to scoop up this gem to use in their sketches. Her feet obviously weren't that cold to run from Georgia to New Mexico. Isn't there some kind of charges that could be brought on her, like "False Kidnapping" or something? I'm pretty sure that nationwide hunt wasn't free.

I Voted For Scott Savol, Dammit
Posted on 04/28/05 @ 9:51 pm

Now kwitcherbitchin' and tune in next week so he can get voted off. Either him or the blonde gay boy with the hole in his throat.

Seriously, can we talk about how utterly uneventful AI has been this year? Maybe it's because they raised the age limit? I don't know…but the talent at least was clearly split down the middle. You had the Haves (Anwar, Nikko, Nadia, Bo, Carrie, Vonzell) and the Have-Nots (Scott, Anthony, Jessica, Constantine, Mikalah, Lindsey). Right now, it's 3-2.

This is Season 4 of this show…we know all the claims of phone phreaking, speed-dialing, unfair voting, and network rigging. Season 1 it was Nikki McKibbin. Season 2 it was Carmen Rasmussen. Season 3 it was Jasmine Trias. And now it's Scott. Sure, they can't sing…but they get voted off eventually. Calm the fuck down. Don't go making all these Internet petitions and crying to the media outlets because Constantscream is gone.

Oops. Too late.

The good talent gets voted off, and only the most mundane of the good talent gets the win. Sure, Kelly's doing good now…that took what, three years after her AI win? Ruben's showing up in doomed FOX sitcoms and re-ran on TVOne singing with IRS-owing Peabo Bryson. Fantasia's schilling MAC products and fucking a model. She might've gotten the best out of the deal.

Don't think Anwar or Nikko or Nadia or Constantinople won't have a record coming out within the next year. Especially Maroulis…didn't his band just get signed recently? They'd be stupid not to take him back, and he'd be stupid not to take his 14:59 and run like Hell on that last second.

I might start voting for Bo now, even though he is a former smackhound. Scott'll end up leaving soon, and I doubt the studio audience will throw much of a hoopla over it. I'm sure Paula won't; she only fucks the Guarini clones.

Goddamn, I can't believe I just devoted a whole entry to American Idol.

Late Night Stimulation
Posted on 04/25/05 @ 1:16 am

I usually reserve checking my mail until Sunday afternoon; lo and behold, what should I discover?

Squee! It's Nikka Costa's un-US released 1996 album Butterfly Rocket. Twin knew I've been on the lookout for it now for almost four years and he found it somewhere in upstate NY. I'm loving it; straight to Euterpe for this one so I can jam with it on the way to work.

Speaking of work, I'm off tomorrow. Confederate Memorial Day. I would be one of those Black folks who'd be all "I'm going to protest by going to work" but…naah. I'll pick my battles, thankyouverymuch. Besides, this is the perfect time to do a little spring cleaning. I spent the latter part of today cooking, organizing, bagging up old clothes for the Salvation Army and writing. I decided to reprise two old writing gigs of mine to try and keep my prose sharp and on point (and mostly to motivate finishing my novel). Lately, the short stories I've been churning out haven't been my best work by any means. I think I peaked with "Writing with Numbers" back in '03. Which reminds me…I'll have to post that on here one day.

Saturday was spent battling my allergies at the Inman Park Festival. EJ and I went and I caught up with one of my old co-workers from Hell and one of my current co-workers. The festival was nice, though. I got some pretty good pictures. Afterwards we had lunch at this shitty little Va-Hi joint called American Roadhouse. We were hungry, so I think we both barely tasted that slop they passed off as mid-priced cuisine. My Reuben was little more than a dry turkey sandwich with coleslaw on it and EJ's tuna melt was really just albacore with a slice of cheese. I was famished, so I had wolfed it down so fast I couldn't even remember how it tasted. Thank God they served Vanilla Coke, the best part of the meal.

I heard there were some Black/Brown blogger meetups this weekend. One impromptu, the other organized. Looks like it was fun.

<checks phone for signal>

Yep…it's still on.

In other news, my review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is coming up on Wednesday. Anyone wanna come with me?

Wednesday Night Recap
Posted on 04/20/05 @ 4:30 pm
  • This Nikka Costa single on her site is on fire…any singer that can run through the alphabet and make it sound this funky deserves props.
  • Speaking of funky, Anwar's ouuuuuuuuuutta here! Can't say I was surprised; that jacket/bellbottom combo with the lackluster performances meant he didn't have much longer to go. Although I still think he should've taken Anthony and Scott and Constantscream with him. The final three will be Carrie, Vonzell and Bo. Carrie will end up winning.
  • Mr. Romance…you've been watching, right? Go, Randy! Boo for Oxygen not having better pictures/profiles of these men besides some corny mobile wallpapers.
  • My writing has been taking an interesting turn lately; not so much into the memoir I'm penning, but moreso into reviews. I've done a couple of book reviews, and right now I'm doing some stuff for a couple of sex sites, not to mention doing product reviews. The vibrating penis pump should be coming in the mail any day now.
  • Oh wait…that was probably a little too much information.
  • Miranda over Trillian. Seriously, it has been slower and slower to open up and has been locking down The Magi considerably. Miranda's up and at 'em in less than five seconds.
  • Big ups to Jeneane and Terrance for their monetary donations! This site will live on!
  • Big ups to Tony for donating a Flickr Pro account…check out my pics; I've been updating on the regular now since I can post from my phone.
  • Interesting developments on the personal front. I'll have to touch on that later.

And just to show I ain't forgot about 'im…
