I'm taking a poll here — which banner do you prefer most? The one with the largest number of votes will end up being the base of this year's Black Weblog Awards design. Number 2 is an interesting contrast in colors. At first I didn't get what you were going for, but there's a high art concept there that is very subtle. Number 1 is a more straightforward advertising approach, the young man looking up seems to be anticipating the arrival.

I think people will "get" the meaning easier with the first and probably be distracted should you use the second.

I prefer the content of #1 but the color scheme and typography of #2. Why not combine?

i prefer design #1. i love the man you've used for the 2nd, but his image kinda overpowers the text over his head.

Now see, I was immediately drawn to #2 because it has a sense of implied history and I find the boldness of the blackness compelling. Besides, I love his white hair.

Design #2 seems to say more on more levels… and I'm not a fan of the overly unsubtle tagline on #1…
