- I am really trying not to go the way of the meme this month and just post a whole lot of tests and crap, but sadly, I don't have much to write about. I started drafting an entry about today being the one year anniversary to Hurricane Katrina, but nothing was lucid enough to make any sense. This government basically fucked over an entire metropolitan city, and we saw both the best and worst sides of humanity throughout this ongoing tragedy. Sure, Café du Monde is selling beignets to pock-mocked tourists, but when will evacuees be able to make it back to the Ninth Ward? And what about the Gulf coast area of Mississippi — how is it faring? Where's Michael Brown? Why haven't we heard any kind of statement of…well, anything from FEMA in the last three months? And this thing with CNN re-running their footage of Katrina from last year all today — who wants to relive that at-the-moment horror? Jesus Christ on a cracker….
- On to some lighter topics — I got my first set of progress reports at Big Company, Inc. and…well…let's just say it's a good thing I have six weeks of training because I've got some stuff to learn. Who knew bevels were "so 1996″? Ouch….
- I stopped by my old job on yesterday to pick up my annual leave check — basically, the time I earned while there, they paid it back to me. Nice, eh? And it was definitely a nice little chunk o' change. So several things are coming to mind. I could put it into my Roth IRA, I could buy a new TV, or I could put it towards a vacation fund. After all, this round-trip, six-night hotel stay package in Paris looks might lovely and affordable…$789! Then again, the only time I'd really be able to take it would be in the dead of winter. Or worse…during SXSW 2007. Damnit!
- I read Kevin Bynes's "No Fats! No Fems!" post back in June, but had no idea the comments had ballooned to this volume. Whoa! Kevin's latest entry," What the hell is wrong with ITLA?", looks like an interesting read. I'd better bookmark it.
- As if starting grad school wasn't enough — I'm thinking of taking some professional education classes over at Georgia Tech. The ones on wine tasting, beginning conversational Spanish and urbanism look promising. Expensive, but promising.
- I'm thinking of putting together a meet and greet for Black gay bloggers in ATL during Black Gay Pride. I was originally thinking it could be at Casa de Karsh, but the TV in the living room is busted, ants are still mysteriously coming from my dishwasher, and I hadn't cleaned the shower yet. It would be an excuse for me to get out and meet some folks and have a few drinks, not to mention meet the rest of the black gay blogging contingent in town. Yeah, even the ones I don't like and the ones who don't like me. Would anyone be interested?
- These days, I go to bed around 10:30pm, wake up at 5:00am, make it to work by 7:00am and get off at 3:30am. I feel so much like my mom now it's crazy. Oops…time for bed, y'all.

From Bernie's "Pop Quiz":
- So, how have you spent your summer vacation?
Summer vacation? Do adults even have those? I've spent these last few months looking for a new job, running the Black Weblog Awards and trying to get a date. I've been successful in the first two.
- What three things do you most want to accomplish before the end of the year?
Buy a Mac (preferably a laptop). Date a guy (i.e., more than one date with the same guy). Get a new desk chair. Those first two should be easy tasks.
- This is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. A year
from now, how far along do you think the Gulf Coast will be towards recovery?
Better than now, but not "back to normal" for anyone living there. I think it's important to remember that Hurricane Katrina did not just hit New Orleans, but nowadays, the disaster area of Katrina is synonymous with the city, so I wonder if further aid will go to other parts of Southern Louisiana and Mississippi which were affected as well.
- In the movie of your life, who gets cast to play you (and you can’t play yourself)?
I don't know his name…but the guy in this commercial.
- Is your overall health and fitness better or worse than it was a year ago?
I'd say it's probably better. The one thing about my old job that was great was that it allowed me the chance to walk a lot. I mean a whole lot — like a mile a day; the campus was very spread out. I hate going to the gym, so any working out I can get done outside of there is good for me. My apartment is also near the pool, so I can go take a dip whenever I like (and when it's not filled with smelly, noisy kids).
- Are your personal finances better or worse than they were a year ago?
Much better. I cancelled one of my delinquent credit cards from college, paid off my IRS money and raised my credit score significantly, in hopes of getting a home in the next five years. I also rolled over my old 401(k) into a traditional IRA, then started a Roth IRA for other deductions. I've also been able to pull in some money from freelancing, not to mention putting BlackGayBlogger.com to work by bringing in about $100 in ad money every month. It's not a lot, but it helps.
- How’s your love life?
I'm afraid I don't have one of those. The boys ain't checkin' for me.
- Seen any good movies lately? Seen any bad ones? Are you looking forward to any upcoming ones in particular?
I think the ones I've seen lately have all been fairly decent (An Inconvenient Truth, Superman Returns, X-Men 3, The Devil Wears Prada), but none really stands out as great. I just saw Idlewild on Saturday which was…cute. Very nice to look at. Think Belly meets Eve's Bayou. I couldn't even tell you what's coming up that looks remotely interesting to me.
- Will the Republicans lose control of Congress this November or will the Democrats find a way to fumble a clear opportunity?
The Dems have repeatedly been fumbling their opportunities to take over Congress by not connecting with their constituents. Hell, the recent elections here in Georgia are a prime example of that. I still think that gay marriage is going to be a hot topic up through November, so stay tuned for some eleventh-hour changes. Just ask Cathy Cox. Oop!
- Schools across the country will open up in the next few days and weeks. What was your favorite grade and what teacher had the most positive impact on you?
My favorite grade was probably twelfth grade, mainly because I knew there wasn't another grade after it and I wouldn't have to deal with the huge loser base I'd been associated with throughout my formative years. The teacher that had the most positive impact on me was my advisor in Mu Alpha Theta, Mr. Swift. He was never actually my teacher, but he did help me realize my love for Math and was my main reason for pursuing it in college.

I still have to get used to my new job (not to mention how crazy my time perceptions are these days). This episode has a little bit of everything in it, so go ahead and start listening! Meanwhile, I'll keep playing catch-up this weekend and brace myself for going back to my old job tomorrow. Ooh!

- Not that I'm going to get into the habit of posting what I listen to ad infinitum, but this is what's been on the phone/mp3 player this week:
Like ol' boy said on the intro…that Idlewild gon' be fiyah. I might catch it this weekend - any takers?
- I mistakenly picked up a copy of Southern Voice this week, but was actually pleasantly surprised by two of the stories I read: one was on the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library's "Out at the Library" national gay history display. I'm also glad to see that John Szabo is adding special efforts to archive black gay history and are working with the Auburn Avenue Research Center and Zami. I might have to go check that out before it leaves on September 7. Christie Ayotte's "Black Pride 101 for White People" was a cute piece — let's see how many White people won't still scratch their heads and scoff at the idea of Atlanta's Black Gay Pride.
- Shopping Disparities in Atlanta: A Metroblogging Atlanta post which is loosely related to Andy Young's inflammatory comments about WalMart.
Local Creative Loafing columnist and Atlanta zeitgeist Andisheh Nouraee has probably the best comment out of the list:
"If you're really in the mood to comparison shop, I suggest you check out the one of the two closest Kroger stores to my house in Southwest Atlanta's Capitol View neighborhood. They're so bad that I can only assume that the Arabs, Jews, Koreans, Commies, Jihadis, Martians, Opus Dei and Freemasons have all teamed up really, really, REALLY stick it to us.
You'll run back to the EAV Kroger on Moreland and kiss the ground."
Seriously, that Kroger is the p-i-t-s. I'd rather go to the mom and pop store behind my complex that has cheap fresh veggies, tofu, but a meat department that smells like toejam. Actually…it's owned by Asians, but staffed by Blacks. Hmm….
From the Washington Post: Sagging 'Survivor' Plays the Race Card
Seriously…I didn't even think Survivor was still on the air. If Mark Burnett is serious about this, he must know the large amount of controversy — and ignorance — which will come forth, which will only make people tune in more, which will raise the ratings, garner the high-ticket advertisers, and only put more money in his pockets. On the plus side, that does mean there'll be more races being represented on prime-time television.
Who says one person can't make a difference anymore?
I missed "Out of Control: AIDS in Black America", but I haven't heard many good things about the presentation of information. Rod's description seems fair and balanced though, so I'll see if I can hunt down a copy on the 'Net to peruse.
Those mai tai's at Trader Vic's are no fucking joke. And they're $4.50 each on Thursday's! Twenty bucks later and my ass was stumbling home.
