Back from the Brink
Posted on 04/29/07 @ 1:47 pm

OK - this is more of a quick update than an actual full-fledged entry. That'll come later on today (hopefully). But here's a little bit of what's been going on (blog posts forthcoming, hopefully):

  • Interviewed for a new job (which I landed)
  • Had to deal with some unfortunate real-life Facebook-related stalker-type drama
  • Death in the family and 45-minute-funeral
  • Where the hell the podcast is (it's coming, I swear!)
  • Computer sickness, death, and rebirth
  • Final exams and registering for classes

As you were.

Forty-Eight Questions
Posted on 04/17/07 @ 12:48 am

I've seen this meme floating around for a few weeks, most recently over at Fave's new spot. Here I go! Where the other two questions went…well, I have no idea.

1. How tall are you barefoot?

5′9″

2. Have you ever smoked heroin?

No.

3. Do you own a gun?

Not in this state.

4. Who's your best friend?

Umm…Twin, I guess. But I don't see him often and we don't communicate that often either.

5. Do you get nervous before “meeting the parents”?

No…parents love me. Their sons, on the other hand…

6. What music are you embarrassed to admit that you listen to?

None - all my music is the bomb (even if you don't like it).

7. What’s your favorite Christmas song?

O Holy Night

8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning?

Orange juice

9. Can you do push-ups?

Yes sir. Mountain climbers too!

10. Why does one question always disappear?

Lost in translation, I guess. Either that or copy and paste.

11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry?

I'm not too big on jewelry, actually.

12. Do you like painkillers?

If they kill pain…sure.

13. What is your secret weapon to lure in the opposite sex?

Apparently, just being myself. I've yet to acquire the secret weapon to lure in the same sex. Now that would be something.

14. Do you own a knife?

Kitchen knives, yeah.

15. Do you have A.D.D.?

No, but I am autistic.

16. Middle Name?

Corneilus.

17. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment?

I should be in bed. The homemade sloppy joes I made were off the hook. I wonder if I should take off Wednesday since my new computer is coming in.

18. Name the last 3 things you have bought:

A new computer, a George Foreman grill, and a book on how to leave the United States.

19. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink:

Water, assorted teas from Teavana, orange juice

20. What time did you wake up today?

4:15a.m. (!)

21. Current worry?

Turning 30 and not being in at least one quasi-serious romantic relationship. Call it the 26-year-old itch.

22. Current hate?

My job. Wait…scratch that. The lack of respect and decency I get at my job.

23. Favourite place to be?

In bed.

24. Least favorite place to be?

Dentist's office.

25. Where would you like to go?

Paris for a month or so. I need to get my speaking chops back, and I just want to be not in America right about now.

26. Do you own slippers?

Yes. Although I call 'em house shoes. You know. Shoes for the house.

27. What shirt are you wearing?

None. (Hey, it's almost bedtime here.)

28. Do you burn or tan?

Tan, I guess. Although I'm pretty dark, so I actually reflect.

29. Favorite colour(s)?

Orange, green, brown

30. Would you be a pirate?

Nah. I like hot water and non-golden-teeth too much for that.

31. Last time you had an alcoholic drink?

Wow…like two weeks ago, I think.

32. What songs do you sing in the shower?

You wouldn't believe me if I told you but…Ave Formosissima from Carmina Burana. Shut up! I like it.

33. What did you fear was going to get you at night as a child?

The belt. Mom liked surprises.

34. What's in your pockets right now?

Nothing. (Boxers don't really have pockets, else they'd be Bermuda shorts.)

35. Last thing that made you laugh?

This episode of Scrubs that just ended.

36. Best bed sheets you had as a child?

I had these cool orange sheets as a kid…I loved 'em.

37. Worst injury you've ever had?

Broke my right elbow about 9 years ago. Got stabbed in the hand with a pencil in 4th grade. Also got stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors when I was in Pre-K.

38. How many TVs do you have in your house?

Two.

39. Who is your loudest friend?

Umm…Goofball, I guess. He laughs like he's in an airport hangar.

40. Who is your most silent friend?

Hey, Mr DJ, if I consider him a friend. (Punk.)

41. Does someone have a crush on you?

I doubt it. If they do…then they need to speak up. My clairvoyance sucks.

42. Do you wish on shooting stars?

Please. Hell no.

43. What is your favorite book?

"A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" by James Joyce.

44. What is your favorite candy?

Twizzlers.

45. What song do you want played at your wedding?

Jesus…I hadn't even thought out that far. I'm still working on return phone calls.

46. What song do you want played at your funeral?

Well that's morbid. Umm…how about some of that screaming gospel music that seems to be all the rage?

47. What were you doing at 12 AM last night?

I was asleep.

48. What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up this morning?

Wondering about what pitfalls I'll have to run into in the office.

A Few Technical Difficulties
Posted on 04/15/07 @ 11:18 pm

Bear with me folks; it would appear that the RSS feed for BlackGayBlogger.com is having some formatting issues; I got word from Tyme about it the other day, and I noticed it myself when I saw my feed in both Bloglines and Google Reader. Some of my recent entries were just one big long block. So I'm doing some code diving and plugin investigation to get down the culprit.

I have an estimated time of when this first started, so I think I already know what's going on. It's either PodPress or Feedburner.

If anything breaks, just shoot me an e-mail. Thanks!

BGB Blogcast #49: Three Questions Answered
Posted on 04/15/07 @ 8:56 pm

On this episode, I answer the questions from my Three Questions Revisited post, as well as give a little information on the 50th show and some upcoming changes to the blogcast. Enjoy!

BGB Blogcast #49

UPDATE: I deactivated PodPress to see if that fixes my RSS feed issue. I added the direct link to the podcast above, which should still show up as a media enclosure in any feed aggregator. If you don't see it, please let me know.

Professional Outings
Posted on 04/12/07 @ 7:30 pm

The job search is back on.

I really don't have any qualms now about working on my resume at work (no one comes by my cube) or ducking into a quiet room for a quick phone interview. I'm not getting any respect, so it's time for me to get the hell on. And to do that, I'm getting my network on.

I remember reading (or hearing) somewhere how like over 80% of the jobs out there aren't even listed – they're found out through networking. This is important for any job seeker, and especially so for Black gay men (particularly in a state where your sexual orientation, whether overt or covert, can get you fired with no questions asked…and race only compounds that). You've gotta get out there and show your face so people know you outside of a resume and a mannerism.

Thing is, my social biorhythm is so weird. There are times when I just prefer to be at home, playing some Wii or writing or lounging on the couch reading a good book and listening to some music and don't want to be bothered. I like the solitude, the time for introspection, and most of all, being cut off from the outside world.

And then there are those times when the outside world is a-calling and I want to be around and with people. They're few and far in between, but when they happen, they come quick and hard.

I was speaking with Buffy the other day about this; he's planning on moving back to Atlanta (much to the chagrin of his fiancé) but is skeptical about networking, especially when it comes to ways to start his career. Buffy, while he has a degree in finance from Morehouse, has only managed to get positions as a bank teller since graduating.

"I'm trying to find a real job. I want to start my career. Do you know about any kinda networking events?"

"Well there's sometimes this thing at the the Lotus Lounge…and then I think there's something called Marketing Mondays at the Four Seasons. Oh! And then there's the alumni association."

"But that's stuff for STRAIGHT PEOPLE. I can't believe with Atlanta being the Black gay mecca and all, there's no kind of networking event for Black gay folks!"

I was hard-pressed to retort. After all, straight people need jobs too, right?

As a Black young professional, I somehow get on the invite list to several of these consonance weekday-named quasi-"networking" events (First Fridays, Third Thursdays, etc.), and I've actually been to a few of them. They're usually at some nice, uptown venue, drinks are copious (and sometimes free), and there's a decent selection of talent to look at…but not touch.

To say it's a largely hetero-forced affair would be an understatement.

The last one of these I went to was a few weeks ago at Toast in Midtown. My intent on going was to just have a drink or two after work, a few crostini, and then stumble on home. Nothing major, and definitely no other intentions than those. Well when I walked in, it was like a seventh-grade dance – boys on one side, girls on the other. Girls were checking out the guys, and vice versa; eventually the two crowds mixed, with most women I chatted with more interested in flirting than networking. The questioning usually went something like this:

"Hi, I'm Karsh. It's nice to meet you."

"Hi Karsh, I'm Tamela. Where do you work?"

"Big Company, Inc. I'm a web designer."

"Oh nice…do you have a girlfriend?"

"No…"

"Why not? You gay or something? Huh?"

STOP. See what I mean? Already leading a brotha down that precarious slope. I remember one of these kinda events I was at a few years ago when I just dropped the hard G on a chick and she went bat-shit, telling other women (who started giving me nasty looks) and men (who immediately backed a few inches away from me if I walked in their direction).

"Girl, I ain't think there was gonna be any FAGGOTS up in here…"

"Nah man, I don't get down with that gay shit…"

Real classy, young "professionals". But back to Buffy.

"So there's like no young Black gay professionals group or something?"

"Not to my knowledge. I know there's AEN, but it's not strictly Black and gay."

"So I guess when I move down there, me and my husband gon' just be sitting up in the house, occasionally searching the want ads and eating beans and weenies."

"Geez, you make it sound so bad."

"I just thought that by now there'd be something for us down there."

"Look, I'm not saying there's not. I just hadn't found it if it does exist."

Buffy's convo did get me to thinking. What is there for young Black gay professionals down here in terms of networking events?
