		<description>&lt;p&gt;great topic. i'm from the south and as far as i can remember there have always been separate functions on every level (grade school on up). it just seemed to be that way by mutual decision. being that i was never at anyone of these functions maybe my opinion has been skewed.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;some of the comments demonstrate why both events may be needed just to maintain order. can't speak for anyone else, but i know when i'm in a predominately white environment i'm not as comfortable as with a more mixed crowd. maybe it's because in the back of my (our?) mind(s), there's the thought of what MIGHT be said behind our backs.&lt;/p&gt;
