What comes to mind when you think of the artist Chaka Khan? A powerful voice? A dynamic, multi-genre singer? "I Feel For You"? Well Chaka is all that and more, and today she's releasing her seventeenth album! The upcoming set, titled Funk This, is produced by the legendary Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the producing powerhouse behind several other artists such as…well…you know how to use Wikipedia. In an industry of hot pocket crooners and pop tart starlets, Chaka Khan has stood the test of time. But don't worry, her new album is more than just classic Chaka. Funk This is a dynamic mix of new and old cuts, including vocals by Michael McDonald and Mary J. Blige. While other artists of her tenure are busy digging through the American Songbook to dredge up old standards, Chaka grabs the bull by the horns and rides her vocal talents forward into the future with fervor, full body and of course, the funk. Standout tracks include "Disrespectful", "One For All Times" and one of her hits with Rufus "Pack'd My Bags". Check out a few audiovisual appetizers from Chaka's new album Funk This (including a special message from Chaka herself), then run out and pick up your copy! But aside from all that's going on with the case, I've noticed there's been a recent surge in the number of racial incidents, snafus, faux-pas, uh-oh's and other foolishment which have been reported. Here's just a small sampling from the past six months:
If you're a minority in America, shit like this has to make you wonder if anything has really changed in the grand scope of race relations in the past forty or so years. For every link that's here, there are probably tens of hundreds of other incidents which haven't been reported that are going on every day. Perhaps what's worse than this reality is the atmosphere of intolerance towards those who speak up against it. They're called race baiters or asked why they can't just "get over it" (the "it" being slavery/discrimination/getting called a racial slur, etc.). Well it's kind of hard to get over something when you're always under some kind of discrimination based on your race, either overt or covert. And it's not just a "Southern" thing, as evidenced by the links above; it seems the further removed the offenders are from the source of their offense, the more it's deemed "OK" and "not a big deal". America seriously needs to have a knock-down, drag-out, 12-round honest discussion about race and race relations. Otherwise, incidents like Jena and Logan, WV and the countless college "race themed" parties are going to continue to happen, and people will keep wondering why. Well it looks like half of my plugins needed upgrading, and I think a few of them might have erroneously disabled commenting. Things should be working now; if not, just shoot me a line. Filed under: Technology Comments: 1 Comment |

Sherri, Sherri, Sherri. It's bad enough to think you wanted $2 million to be on The View, just like Whoopi (who has far more street and Hollywood cred) — not a good look for someone whose most notable roles were as a hairdresser with pink pigtails and a loud, angry rabblerouser — but this clip? Before that, you went on the show during your first guest spot saying you were going through a divorce with your husband who had a child with his mistress, spouting murderous threats against him, then came back for a later guest spot saying you took him back? Yeah girl, you'se a skronnng Black woman. I don't really understand how Shepherd's simple-minded, Bible-backed yet cracked-out whacked opinions even fit in with The View's coterie. Among Whoopi, Behar, Hasselbeck and Walters, Shepherd comes off like a kid sitting at the grown folks table. I can almost imagine her in the coming weeks even slipping into slave talk for jest (I don't know nuthin' 'bout no circumnavigation!)…you know, because she's a comedienne. Then again, so are Goldberg and Behar, except they're funny. She just comes off as an ignorant dolt who uses the welfare of her son as an excuse to not know something we all learned back in grade school. I'm sure this will only be the first of more ignorant shit she'll say in the weeks and months to come. UPDATE: Well it wasn't quite slave talk, but Shepherd explained herself on today's View, chalking it up with ghetto girl naivete and, as she puts it, a "senior brain-poopy moment." Maybe her and Miss Teen South Carolina should take a Geography 101 class together! Maps and flat worlds…imagine that! Filed under: Entertainment Comments: 1 Comment |

You'd think with all the pre-emptive hyping up for the Black Weblog Awards, I wouldn't have forgotten about the importance of getting votes for something. So after all my prodding, I only have to say this: vote for my panels for SXSW 2008! You do have to sign up for a SXSW account to vote, but it's painless and takes less than a few minutes. Rank it on a scale of 1-5 stars, and you're done! Simple and easy. Here are my panels: |
