What comes to mind when you think of the artist Chaka Khan?

A powerful voice?

A dynamic, multi-genre singer?

"I Feel For You"?

Well Chaka is all that and more, and today she's releasing her seventeenth album! The upcoming set, titled Funk This, is produced by the legendary Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the producing powerhouse behind several other artists such as…well…you know how to use Wikipedia. In an industry of hot pocket crooners and pop tart starlets, Chaka Khan has stood the test of time. But don't worry, her new album is more than just classic Chaka.

Funk This is a dynamic mix of new and old cuts, including vocals by Michael McDonald and Mary J. Blige. While other artists of her tenure are busy digging through the American Songbook to dredge up old standards, Chaka grabs the bull by the horns and rides her vocal talents forward into the future with fervor, full body and of course, the funk. Standout tracks include "Disrespectful", "One For All Times" and one of her hits with Rufus "Pack'd My Bags".

Check out a few audiovisual appetizers from Chaka's new album Funk This (including a special message from Chaka herself), then run out and pick up your copy!

  4. Chaka kind of did an album of standards just 3 years ago. It was called ClassicKahn. Chaka's singing was impeccable, and her renditions of songs like "To Sir With Love" and "Diamonds are Forever" were stunning. Had disappointing sales for a CD that good, I hope this one will be better. Gotta say that to me the duet with Mary J is the weakest song on Funk This.

  5. Chaka and BeBe Winans join the cast of THe Color Purple on Broadway starting in January!!!! They will play Sophia and Harpo. Chaka is an interesting choice, although she seems more the Shug Avery type. Bebe Winans is a little old for Harpo though…..

  7. bgb my bff (blog fam forever),

this album is three times dope. i think that all year i've been waiting for funk this, meshell's the world has made me the man of my dreams, and rahsaan patterson's wines & spirits. of course i didn't realize i was waiting for them until i heard them — and they all blew me away. but you get the drift — you're bumping miss khan.
