After 20 years of working in various non-profits and half a dozen retail and fast food places, what I've learned is that every single working environment is dysfunctional. You put more than two people together and there's gonna be drama of some sort. You just gotta pick your poison. If this were me having to choose, I think I'd go for the new job. If it doesn't work out, you'd at least be at a higher pay scale and in the field you hope to be in eventually. Making it easier, in my possible naive and wrong pov, to get another job in the same field.

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy the work. It makes the dysfunction more tolerable.

I think the venue does not matter. The same mess goes on. I work hard not to mix business with pleasure. I do not socialize away from the office with my co-workers and don't discuss my personal business with them. I do my job and take my behind home.

Well, I see no matter what field your in, marginalization still exists. As a GBM in academia I encounter retarded questions daily. So, what are you going to do with your Master's degree? My answer: I am going to pursue my phd and get a job in an academia (duh). Automatically, their eyes multiply in diameter and they turn beet red. Actions truly speak louder than words. They do not want to admit that a black man regardless of orientation, is a threat. So, I say all that to say I totally understand your plight.

Agree with Omar, I don't put my business out there so people can't make up crazy stuff. People are jealous, petty and crazy.

But then again it wouldn't be a Karsh blog post without a little bit of drama.

Although my professional career has only been with the Federal government, they deal with the same office politics and gossip issues as the private sector. I learned this lesson a while ago: "Keep sh*t to yourself." I don't get into conversations about my personal life or anything I do outside of work.

When Lead Designer asked if you were in school, my answer would have been a simple, "Yes". Nothing more.
