CNN Presents: Black in America
Posted on 07/25/08 @ 11:44 am

CNN gets an F for that whole mess.In the words of Blaine Edwards and Antoine Merriweather: hated it. It felt to me like two hours of rubbing salt in the wounds of the problems in the Black community while offering little (if any) solutions toward remedying these staggering conditions. I mentioned sometime during my Twitterfest during the two 2-hour installments that I felt like CNN phoned it in. In Part 1, they mainly focused on the Rand family, picked and chose relatives from within that one family, and tried to present it as a microcosm of Black women in America. Part 2 focused on two men attached by the Little Rock Nine and their struggles while presenting it as a microcosm of Black men in America. Overall, neither installment did their topics full justice. Or even half justice, to be honest. The series felt like a primer for non-Black communities to get a glimpse into the Black community through use of an annoying spoken word poet, bold fonts, and statistics (without explanation). Overall, it just rubbed me the wrong way for several reasons (even more than what's mentioned here). Then again, could you really expect an American news organization to condense the 200+ year "Black experience" in all its intricacies and nuances and developments since the assassination of Dr. King forty years ago into just a four-hour period?

Deep sighs all around.

So what did you think about the series? Provocative? Watered-down? Necessary? Share your thoughts here, and please, do not hold back. I sure as hell won't.

What Just Happened Here?
Posted on 07/23/08 @ 12:09 am

OK, so last night, I had a date with this guy I met online (don't worry — it wasn't Craigslist). We've been chatting it up via e-mail for the past week now, and our schedules finally matched up for us to meet.

We went to Downtown Decatur and had food and drinks at Eddie's Attic (normally not my type of place, but my date made it tolerable), and then more drinks at Brick Store Pub. We had a blast throughout the evening, parted ways with a favorable kiss (which he initiated), and he extended an invitation for me to meet with him on Wednesday for a weekly Project Runway party with his friends. Today, after work and some shopping, I texted him saying I was looking forward to meeting up tomorrow and that we should chat tonight to discuss the particulars. Here's what I get in return:

Whoa whoa whoa - somebodys moving too fast lol i think we should probably slow things down way down way way down

Weird, yes. But two minutes later, I then get this:

Sorry man just not a match for me im afraid. i had a lot of fun last night though; you're super cool but just not for me

Really? Wha' happened here, folks?

Insert Witty Vacation Quote Here
Posted on 07/20/08 @ 2:28 am

So one month after my vacation's occurred, I'm finally getting the chance to talk about it. And you know the fucked up part about it? This past month's been so busy it's like I didn't even have a damn vacation. Actually, now that I'm sitting down here to write about it…I don't remember much about it, so I'll just give a few highlights. Check out my Flickr set so you can see pics that accompany this li'l slice of my vacay.

This Just In!

Karsh has a goddamn, foul ass, motherfucking mouth. It's not that I don't have a large vocabulary, it's just that curse words sound better sometimes. And no one can daisy-chain and improv curse words like a Southerener.

Film at 11.

I Blame Society

Damn, I hadn't realized it's been that long since I updated. Time flies when you're on vacation then get thrown under the bus for it at work.

The vacation was good. I have to go into more detail about it, but you can see the pictures on Flickr (I didn't get to take much because a) I forgot my camera half the time and b) the volunteers were super anal about having anyone take pictures in the concerts). Speaking of concerts, I got to catch some great acts — Stephanie McKay, Catherine Russell, Beady Belle, Jake Shimabikuro, Slide Hampton, Al Green, Soulive, and the Soul Rebels Brass Band, get some great food, and catch up with Twin, Triplet and their friends.

Coming back was some bullshit, since my boss forgot that she signed my time off, wrote me up, and I come back to work with a cardboard box on my desk. On top of that, I still had work assigned to me when I was off which went late, even though I wasn't at work. So I come off a weekend of pleasure to some straight-up work drama. So because of this, I not only got put on an earlier work shift (6:00am - 3:00pm), but they moved my desk right across the hall from Office Creeper, our department Krusty the Klown director. A few days after the incident, everything was cleared when it turns out my manager didn't even check her e-mail or the shared calendar everyone posts their time off to, so she immediately jumped to the worst conclusion.

I will say this though — since the new shift, I've been blowing the other designers out of the water with my production numbers and accuracy, with no acknowledgment. I spent this past weekend not doing a damn thing but playing video games and eating wings.

Oh yeah, and my double courseload with school starts tomorrow. And the Black Weblog Awards go through all of August.

Hell, I think I need another vacation!
