101 in 1001: The Final Update
Posted on 09/18/07 @ 10:48 am

I can't believe in just a week, it'll have been 1001 days since I wrote out this list of things to do. I haven't done an update in a while, but I figure I should go ahead and wrap up the updates on this list so I can start on the second one. (That's right…I'm doing another 101/1001.)

What I learned from going through this process is that it helps a lot to give yourself tangible, concrete goals that can be measured. Take my #96: "Eat more fruits and vegetables." Well…I was eating a lot of them before, so how can I quantify "more"? An extra stalk of asparagus? Another strawberry for dessert? Next time around, I just need to do better about how I do my tasks. A good bit of these may turn up on my next list though…we'll see. Overall, I accomplished 51 out of 101 tasks. Not bad, but I could've done better.

Well, here are the ones which I never got around to during my original 101/1001:

Reach Out and Spam Someone
Posted on 01/01/07 @ 7:01 pm

I just checked my Spam folder today and came across two month's worth of e-mails, so I'm busy tonight responding and such. This one struck me as odd though:

HEY KARSH, WHAT'S UP… I just wanted to tell u, that I really luv ur blogg and especially your podcasts! I have seen that one of ur 101 in 1001 is "Paris in Spring", yeah baby so see u in spring07 over here in Europe? Whatever, go on with ur good work as a blogger - I'll be on the website every fuckin' single day! thanks and merry x-mas to u karsh!

And while the sentiment is nice and all…the rest of the e-mail was straight up spam, with grainy porn pictures and such embedded in the body. I'd have to say, this was probably the oddest spam e-mail I've ever received. At least chica did her homework on the 101/1001 (which I need to update).

Sorry boo. Don't think Europe in '07 is gonna be an option for me.

Another 101/1001 Update
Posted on 07/18/06 @ 11:30 am

I haven't visited my 101/1001 goals in a while, so it might be time for a quick peek.

  • 4. Write a book. This is going to be a huge source of contention for me because I can't decide on if I should do a science fiction book or a roman à clef based on my shitty work experiences.

  • 11. Develop BlackComix into more than just ideas in my head. This is actually tied into #4, the sci-fi book idea.

  • 24. Stop drinking soda for a month. I'm trying, but dude…Vault is SO good! I am trying though. I usually drink a Vault then down four 12-oz. glasses of water.

  • 28. Eliminate my credit card debt. T-minus $300 baby. Kids, don't sign up for credit cards in college just to get free schwag.

  • 42. Launch Soapbloggers. Now, I've been sitting on this domain name now for about two years, but I realize I will need a partner if I really get it up and going. Any takers to write a dedicated multi-author blog on everything dealing with current American soap operas? I got dibs on All My Children.

  • 67. Drink at least 6 glasses of water daily (8 oz.). Tied into #24.

  • 72. Enlist the help of a financial advisor. Done and done — found a kick-ass one through my credit union who helped me straighten out my 401(k) monies into a conventional IRA and then opened up a separate Roth IRA as well. Also plunked some cash down into a CD to take out in five years for…well, who knows what? I'm just glad I'm starting to get these coins under control.

  • 82. Learn Flash and Dreamweaver. I've pretty much got Dreamweaver under control and getting a handle on Flash. I did this little front page slideshow thing at work (sort of like Comcast.com) that went over very well. Truth be told, though, I do not like working with Flash. However, there's nary a developer job that comes through that doesn't require it.

  • 86. Save $2000 or more. Tied into #72.

  • 99. Crash my family reunion. I have some special plans for that. Of course, first I have to contact my estranged great aunt in Cleveland who's information I received from Death to Shakespeare. I also learned that my Uncle Buddy is rolling through the ATL for a government conference and wants to see his only nephew that's not in jail! If anything, there's a dinner at Kyma in it for me.

101 in 1001 Redux
Posted on 07/10/05 @ 1:05 pm

I hadn't had an update to this shit since January! Let's change that, shall we?

#4 - Write a book. Manual is coming along rather nicely. I don't think it's at book status yet, but I'm doing pretty good with writing a semi-autobiographical satire novel. I hadn't really even thought about the whole "how will it get published" thing. Lord knows self-publishing would be a challenge.

#5 - Raise my credit score to over 650. Wouldn't you know it - as soon as I cancelled my Capital One credit card, my damn score shot up by 102 points. I got my free credit report at the beginning of June and damn near fainted when I saw that shit.

#9 - Get a better job (i.e., one I like AND I get well paid AND my work is appreciated). Well, I have that now. I do like my job AND I get (fairly) well paid AND my work is appreciated. Now to just work on the shoddy management issue.

#11 - Develop BlackComix into more than just ideas in my head. I was there for a minute, y'all. Had found me an artist and was ready to do this thing. But then he started spoutin' this crap about wanting to "find me a man" and just turned into a gigantic asshole. The moral to this story is to let sleeping hoes lie.

#14 - Have amazing sex like the guys in the TitanMen videos without performance anxiety. Lately, yeah…I've been all over this. Heh heh heh… Not sure how it happened, but that whole inhibition thing just went out the window. Holla!

#17 - Read (or listen to) at least 3 books a month. This should really have been sketched out to something more quantifiable, but so far I've been doing good. I'm juggling Drop by Mat Johnson, The Untelling by Tayari Jones and re-reading Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk.

#30 - Pay all bills on time for 3 months straight.Yes, and can I just say how much I HATE automatic debits? Companies, please take the money out when you say you will so my monthly bank account report doesn't look like a fucking heart rate monitor wavelength, OK? That's why my ass is broke now, paying bill on time.

#43 - Take more photos and integrate them into the site using Flickr. What, you haven't been checking out the gallery?

#49 - Learn to play at least one Nobuo Uematsu piece either on piano, violin or trombone. I can play "Rest in Peace" the death dirge from FFVI. Working on more. Transposition is a lot harder when you don't have a keyboard!

#60 - Attend the symphony. The Dear Friends: Music from Final Fantasy concert was off. the. hook. Seriously, it was an awesome experience to share that music with so many other deserving people. Playing "One Winged Angel"…twice? Oh God, I was in heaven. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that the Black Mages will do a US tour so I can die a happy man after hearing "Boss Battle" and "Fierce Battle" from FFIV live. I could go on, but Hikikomori gave a great review which I'll just shamelessly plug.

#64 - Go 24 hours without using the computer. Done and done when I moved into the new place and Comcast didn't have shit ready for two days after their original date.

#71 - Move to a new apartment. Where do you think I'm typing this from?

#73 - Enlist the help of a psychologist/psychiatrist. Our sessions actually ended about 3 weeks ago. Has it helped me weed through some things? Yeah. In essence, it was quite helpful (even if I now have more questions than before the therapy). No, this doesn't mean I'm one of those pill-poppin' bitches who need a Paxil or a Zoloft just to deal with folks. I'm doing fine handling assholes in small doses, thankyouverymuch.

#82 - Learn Flash and Dreamweaver. I know Dreamweaver pretty well now since I have to use it at work. But Flash? Ugh…that bitch is harder than eight bitches in a bitch boat.

#83 - Buy some comfortable and nice-looking dress shoes. Rockport's are the only way to go.

#93 - Go through my clothes and give the stuff I no longer wear to charity. It took forever, but the Salvation Army finally came and got my shit from my old apartment.

#97 - Start the Black Weblog Awards. The domain name is bought, but I've been quite lazy about designing it (something which will more than likely change after 7/4/2005). Maybe I'll bring on Frank as a partner since he wants to do a similar venture.

So how are you doing on yours, eh?
