"Junior", This Ain't

He is not the first pregnant man, and definitely not the first one we've seen on TV.

So unless you've been under a rock for the past two weeks, the story of Thomas Beatie, the "pregnant man" from Oregon who's story has been in numerous periodicals and even on Oprah. Thomas — born Tracy Langondino — is certainly not the first female-to-male transgender to carry a child (and certainly won't be the last), but the media and the blogosphere have been blowing this incident up to astronomical proportions. And every Tom, Dick and Vagina has an poorly-formed, hate-filled opinion on the matter, spouting Bible scriptures, homophobic remarks, and general small-minded ignorance laced with talk of damnation, sin, hell, and God. (And if you want to know what Sherri Shepherd thinks, she's already given her POV on transgendered people months ago.)

Never mind that biologically, Thomas is still a woman with a uterus and fallopian tubes (actually, just one fallopian tube since he lost one in an ectopic pregnancy years earlier), and him having the child technically wouldn't be different than a lesbian couple having a child. (Then again, if you have a problem with that, you probably aren't a regular reader here anyway.)

I had to say something about it, because all this hullabaloo only underscores two things about the American public:

  1. We still don't know how in the hell to talk with/deal with/"handle" transgendered people.
  2. We have a short ass memory.

  • Not like we didn't need any more obvious evidence of the degradation of popular Black music, but what's with all these current songs that have monosyllabic refrains? Seriously, listen to your urban radio station, and songs either have an "Ayyyyyy" or an "Ohhhhh" thrown in the background. Like, someone went in the studio and purposely arranged that shit. Polow da Don? I know we went to the 'House at the same time, but I'm lookin' right at you, homeboy. Oh dear…I remember back in the day when it was just Ds.
    Yeah…deez nuts! Gotcha.

  • So there's a dude here at Big Company, Inc. that looks like a real-life version of the Hamburgler. I mean, if the Hamburgler turned in the tie and striped outfit for some highwaters and a sweater vest. Every time I see him, I have to hold back the robble robbles.

  • Jesus fuck, I am so tired of the word "swagger". Runner up? "Grown and sexy". We get it, we get it. Now let's move on.

  • Oprah has an "exclusive" on the pregnant man that's been all over the media lately. As much as I know folks love Oprah, her record of talking about LGBT issues has been spotty at best, so I'm interested to see how she'll handle it. With kid gloves, I'm sure. And I'm also wondering what Lee Mingwei thinks about all this.

    T-Minus Ten. T-Minus Nine: Ain't Saying Nothing
    Posted on 03/09/08 @ 10:51 pm

This is another piss-poor attempt to get back in the saddle of blogging.

Which is funny, since so much of my time away from blogging these days is actually talking about blogging…but not actually doing it.

And of course, the work/school/Che combination has kept me busy.

Oh…and the Black Weblog Awards! We just wrapped up our 2008 BWA Theme Contest with this stunning entry:

    winner.jpg

Oh yeah, I'm digging it. In the coming days, I'll work on making promo graphics for everyone, putting up the new teaser site, and then working behind the scenes on the new BWA site.

Speaking of the new BWA site, I planned to have something up by SXSW, but decided against it at the last minute. My interest for wanting to go to SXSW has waned considerably over the years, and it's now to the point that I won't even make an attempt next year to go. Not to say that going isn't that serious…it's just that my zeal to go has subsided to the point of nonexistence.

But if I get a sponsor to pay, I'll be all up in that bitch. Believe it.

Let's see…what else…I've been playing a lot of video games lately. If you've got a 360, add me (tech1130) and let's play sometime. Mostly, I've got RPGs (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, etc.), but I have plenty of XBLA games, so we can play up something. For the Wii owners out there, if you've got Super Smash Bros. Brawl, drop me a comment and let's trade friend codes.

Wait…I just realized I'm putting it out there to find more ways to NOT blog…by playing video games.

    Hey, no one's perfect.

    Peeking My Head In
    Posted on 02/26/08 @ 10:47 pm

Just so y'all know, I'm not dead yet.

As usual, I'm busy with work, school, the Awards, and now a boyfriend. Funny, he said yesterday he likes my "manic energy", which I guess would be what could accurately describe what these past few months've been like.

Anywho, I also wanted to check in and say that I now have hotlink protection on my links since my bandwidth has been damn near sucked dry by rampant hotlinkers. I tried the whole "asking nicely" thing, but getting replies like "fuck off" and "eat a dick" have worn thin.

So now if you hotlink one of my images, you get a rather…um…NSFW-type picture. Judging by the already nasty e-mails I'm getting from hotlinkers, it's working!

And if you don't know how to download an image from the Internet, save it to your own space (use Photobucket - it's free) and post it somewhere else…then just get off the 'Net.

For real — push back from the keyboard and go outside or something.

Alright, back off to the land of studying, 45-hour work weeks, logistics planning and Che.

Hey, it's rough, but that's life.
